Early Decision Bounces Back

October 21, 2010
The recession appears to have been very good for the practice of "early decision," in which applicants must commit to enroll if admitted. Not only are many colleges reporting increased interest from applicants in applying early, but 2009 saw a jump in the proportion of colleges reporting that they were increasing the number of students admitted this way.
These are key findings of the 2010 "State of College Admission," an annual report from the National Association for College Admission Counseling. The report is based on surveys of college admissions offices and high school guidance counselors.

Weird Scholarships

Many students think that they have little to no chance of ever winning a scholarship. However, not all scholarships are reserved for star athletes and valedictorians. There are scholarships for every kind of student. Many scholarships are reserved for students with unusual qualities or talents. These awards are sometimes known as weird scholarships.

Types of Weird Scholarships

Weird scholarships are awarded to students for a variety of different reasons. There arescholarships for left-handed students, scholarships for students who excel in duck calling, and scholarships for students who play the tuba. Some of these more unique scholarships include:
  • National Candy Technologist Scholarship
  • Tall Clubs International Student Scholarship
  • The Vegetarian Resource Group College Scholarship
Many weird scholarships are not awarded because of a characteristic or interest, but rather because of the outcome of a contest. These contests include the Duct Tape Prom Dress Competition or the National Beef Ambassador Program.

Winning a Weird Scholarship

The chances of winning a weird scholarship are usually increased due to small applicant pools. The fewer people who know about or qualify for a scholarship, the less competition there will be. If you qualify for a scholarship of this nature, take the time to apply because you could be exactly what the scholarship committee is looking for.

Don't Get Spooked by Financial Aid!

Don't Get Spooked By Financial Aid
If the FAFSA and federal financial aid seems daunting to you, don't worry. The Student Loan Network is committed to making financial aid more transparent and easy to understand for you and your family. Let's do a little overview of federal financial aid:
Delicious Candy CornMuch like the delicious colors of Halloween's candy corn, there are 3 main federal aid products that are available to students attending accredited, Title IV* schools. These include Stafford loansPell Grants and PLUS loans. There also is something called a Perkins loan, but it is up to a school to award it to students with exceptional financial need.
Stafford loans are by far the most common financial aid given to students. Depending on your eligibility status, grade level and EFC figure, you can borrow anywhere between $5,500 and $20,500 per academic year alone. To learn more about Stafford loans, visit theStudent Loan Network.
The Pell Grant is an award for students with very high financial need. Generally speaking, your family needs an EFC of 5000 or lower to qualify for the full amount of this grant. Your mileage may vary.
PLUS loans are credit-based, supplemental loans meant to bridge the gap between other financial aid and your total cost of attendance. Presently, the two types of PLUS loans are Parent PLUS and Graduate PLUS. As the names imply, Parent PLUS loans must be borrowed by an undergraduate student's parent and Graduate PLUS loans are available exclusively to graduate students.
* Title IV is a certification

The Cost of Higher Education - Most Expensive Colleges

The price just keeps rising, and for some, the prices will keep getting higher. No, we’re not talking about taxes or insurance rates…we’re talking about college. Most of you have already hit that hurdle, but that doesn’t mean that an annual tuition is a thing of your past.
The annual Forbes report on America’s most expensive college was released yesterday, putting Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York at top with $57,600 a year. Think that’s extreme? They’re not alone. Trailing close behind is Columbia University in New York at $54,400 a year, Bard College at $54,275 in New York’s Hudson River Valley, Wesleyan University at $53,976 in Connecticut and Vanderbilt University at $53,660 in Nashville Tennessee.
Since last year the average annual cost of tuition has risen by nearly five percent, making it one of the most expensive times to be sending the kids away. Still, some of the smaller colleges indicate that a higher percentage than anywhere else hand out financial aid (including 65 percent of Sarah Lawrence students).

Standardized Testing in College Admissions: Profile of a Conscientious O...

From The Huffington Post, 9/28/10, Peter Buffett

If only there were more parents like his. The latest research shows that
college students today are in contact with their parents over 13 times/week
through various types of communication and that it is also carrying over
into the workplace after their student graduates, but that is a different
article!
